area was a san francisco arts and culture magazine meant to explore a new topic every month which was reflected in an almost entirely redesigned magazine conceptualized specifically for that month's subject. only the design of the regular department columns would carry over; a design that recalls mapping grids, thus relating back to the magazine's title.
